Sub-Radio — The Full Version of “Stacy’s Dad” Is Here at Last

Sub-Radio promised to post the full version of “Stacy’s Dad” when 10,000 people pre-saved of their new single, “1990something”.

It happened this week!

This is the band that got me through the pandemic. Two or three times a week, they streamed a live performance on Reddit from the basement of one of the band members. I sort of stumbled across one of their shows and was immediately hooked. These guys are wonderful!

Those performances introduced them to a national audience. When the threat of Covid diminished earlier this year, they embarked on two successful tours through the West and Midwest.

While all this was going on, they released a video of the first verse of a song called “Stacy’s Dad”. The response was immediate: The video got more than two million “Likes” and more than 25 thousand comments on TicTok.

The second verse came out a few weeks later, and the final version is what you see in the above video.

The band is back home now, and will be playing at Union Stage on The Wharf in DC this week. They added a second show on 8 July, because the first show has sold out.

The band members all went to high school together in suburban Washington, DC, and have been playing together ever since. I’ve posted some of their videos in the past, and I’ll probably do it again next week.

Their sound reminds me of the great power-pop bands I used to hear at the original 9:30 Club in DC, and order (on CD!) from Not Lame Records in Colorado.

I think Sub-Radio’s update is one of those rare cases in which the new version outshines the original.

For comparison, and because it’s been a long time, here’s Fountains of Wayne’s 2003 hit “Stacy’s Mom”, from the band’s third studio album, Welcome Interstate Managers.

It’s much creepier than I remember it to be.
