Better Call Saul — Season Five Starts Tonight

Looks who’s back!

It’s Saul Goodman, a shyster so corrupt, so morally bankrupt, so totally devoid of ethics, honesty, and scruples that it’s surprising he didn’t pop up advising the Republican senators during the recent impeachment trial.

And look who else is back!

Gus Fring!

Héctor  Salamanca!

Mike Ehrmantraut!

And even DEA agent Hank Schrader!

All brought back from the dead for this prequel to Breaking Bad, probably the finest television achievement of the still-very-young 21st century.

There’s a never-ending debate on line—one of those Kirk-vs-Picard things—about exactly when Walter White broke bad and went over to the dark side. (I admired the Redditor who answered the question by posting sonogram of a fetus.)

With Jimmy McGill, the question is pretty much resolved: It was when Jimmy McGill became “Saul Goodman”. That’s where we are at the start of Series Five.

After tonight’s episode, Better Call Saul will return with a second episode on Monday night in its regular time slot. This is the show’s next-to-last season, but, hey, s’all good, man.

Better Call Saul — Season 4 Premiere Official Teaser

Jimmy McGill, a lawyer whose honesty, ethical standards, and judicial temperament have put him on the shortlist for Donald Trump’s next Supreme Court appointment, joins us again in a little more than a month, when Better Call Saul returns to AMC on Monday, 6 August 2018.

Some TV series, like UnREAL and Mr Robot, have brilliant first seasons, but then fall apart the second time around. Season two of UnREAL was all over the place, and the second season of Mr Robot got so far into its own head that it was unwatchable. Better Call Saul and Fargo, on the other hand, have only gotten better with age.

It will be interesting to see if this year’s stunner, Killing Eve, can maintain the glorious originality it showed during its initial run.

As for Better Call Saul, expect to see a lot more of Gus Fring, Mike Ehrmantraut, and Hector Salamanca.

Here’s a synopsis of the new season, with very minor spoilers. Nothing you wouldn’t expect if you’ve been watching the show.

S’all good, man.

“In Better Call Saul‘s fourth season, Chuck’s death catalyzes Jimmy McGill’s transformation into Saul Goodman. In the wake of his loss, Jimmy takes steps into the criminal world that will put his future as a lawyer — and his relationship with Kim — in jeopardy. Chuck’s death deeply affects former colleagues Howard (Patrick Fabian) and Kim as well, putting the two of them once again on opposite sides of a battle sparked by the Brothers McGill. While Mike takes a more active role as Madrigal Electromotive’s newest (and most thorough) security consultant. It’s a volatile time to be in Gus Fring’s employ, as Hector’s collapse sends shock waves throughout the Albuquerque underworld and throws the cartel into chaos — tearing apart both Gus and Nacho’s well-laid plans. While Gus changes course, Nacho finds himself in the crosshairs of deadly forces.”

Life without Game of Thrones

I suspect I’m not the only person who became increasingly restless, agitated, and fidgety as it got closer and closer to nine o’clock Sunday night.

For the past 10 weeks, I’ve gone through a little ritual every Sunday evening:  Pouring a glass of white wine, filling a bowl with cherries, or a plate with Wheat Thins and bleu cheese or pâté, dimming the lights, shutting down the distractions.

Getting ready for Game of Thrones.

Look, much as I love UnREAL and Fargo, Better Call Saul and Mr Robot, nothing else currently on television comes close to the epic, jaw-droppingly awesome scope and intensity of Game of Thrones.  It’s going to be a long nine-and-a-half-month wait for Season 7.

Many of the comments about the final episode mentioned the superb use of music during the final episode of Series 6.

“A Lannister always pays his debts.”  Here’s an audio-only capture of the orchestration that played while Cersei Corleone Lannister collected hers.

Better Call Saul Returns Tonight

Better Call Saul, one of the ten best American TV series* of 2015, returns for a second season tonight.  Watch the caterpillar Jimmy McGill gradually turn into the butterfly that is Saul Goodman.

An Easter Egg is basically an In Joke.  In video games, discovering an Easter Egg can reward a player with shortcuts or extra lives.  In film, it can be a subtle reference that is not obvious to anyone but real devotees.  The great Arrested Development may be the best example of this—it was loaded with Easter Eggs.

In this video, YouTuber PhilanthroPwn finds 10 Breaking Bad Easter Eggs in the first series of Better Call Saul.

*Top Ten of 2015:   Better Call Saul, Game of Thrones, Mr. Robot, Galavant, Mad Men, HannibalThe Knick, Penny Dreadful, UnReal, and Fargo, in no particular order.

First Stop: Yo Mama’s

My flight arrived in New Orleans around 4 PM Sunday afternoon.  It took close to an hour to get to my hotel in the French Quarter—the early Mardi Gras parades were already underway, and the streets were jammed.  Quick change into shorts, because it was 74 degrees in New Orleans.  And 15 minutes later, I was sitting at the upstairs bar at Yo Mama’s.

Yo Mama's

Yo Mama’s

I love this place!  It’s one of the all-time great dives.

It’s been a long time since I was an habitué of dive bars, but if Yo Mama’s was in Washington, I’d be there every week.  It’s an amazingly friendly place, utterly w/o attitude or pretense.

I’m usually not good in crowds. especially crowds of people I don’t know well.  Too put it in New Orleans-relevant terms, I have never relied on the kindness of strangers.  But Yo Mama’s made me feel comfortable and at home, even though I knew no one else in the bar.

And, as I’ve mentioned before, Yo Mama’s serves the best hamburgers in the world.

Yo Mama's Bacon Peanut Butter Burger

Specialty of the House

Here it is, the justly famous Bacon Peanut Butter Burger. served w/a baked potato loaded w/sour cream.   Suspend your skepticism.   I know a burger topped w/bacon and peanut butter sounds a little unusual, but damned if it isn’t the best burger I’ve ever eaten.  It works!

I really should try one of Yo Mama’s other offerings, like the Roquefort Bleu Cheese or the Bull Fighter, which is topped with avocado, jalapeños and salsa.  It’s just that I find the Bacon Peanut Butter Burger irresistible.

Yo Mama's Hot Sauce

Yo Mama’s Hot Sauce

My souvenir.  A bottle of Yo Mama’s Official Hot Sauce.

I may have mentioned that I was eagerly awaiting the start of the TV series Better Call Saul. Like, since 2013.  Sunday, 8 February 2015 was the premier, so I was careful to be back at my hotel in time for the 10 PM start.

I’d even brought my second favourite cap, to wear during the show.  It was a gift from my cousin Gus.   He died.

(For my favourite cap, look here.)

Los Pollos

My Second-Favourite Hat

And I was just in time to catch the last five minutes of the show.  There’s this thing called “Central Time”.

The happy ending is that I made sure I was tuned in way before the encore the next day, so I saw not only the first two episodes, but caught the lead in show, which was (ah!) Breaking Bad. And not just any episode, but the devastating “Felina.”

Oh, was I happy!
