My flight arrived in New Orleans around 4 PM Sunday afternoon. It took close to an hour to get to my hotel in the French Quarter—the early Mardi Gras parades were already underway, and the streets were jammed. Quick change into shorts, because it was 74 degrees in New Orleans. And 15 minutes later, I was sitting at the upstairs bar at Yo Mama’s.
I love this place! It’s one of the all-time great dives.
It’s been a long time since I was an habitué of dive bars, but if Yo Mama’s was in Washington, I’d be there every week. It’s an amazingly friendly place, utterly w/o attitude or pretense.
I’m usually not good in crowds. especially crowds of people I don’t know well. Too put it in New Orleans-relevant terms, I have never relied on the kindness of strangers. But Yo Mama’s made me feel comfortable and at home, even though I knew no one else in the bar.
And, as I’ve mentioned before, Yo Mama’s serves the best hamburgers in the world.
Specialty of the House
Here it is, the justly famous Bacon Peanut Butter Burger. served w/a baked potato loaded w/sour cream. Suspend your skepticism. I know a burger topped w/bacon and peanut butter sounds a little unusual, but damned if it isn’t the best burger I’ve ever eaten. It works!
I really should try one of Yo Mama’s other offerings, like the Roquefort Bleu Cheese or the Bull Fighter, which is topped with avocado, jalapeños and salsa. It’s just that I find the Bacon Peanut Butter Burger irresistible.
Yo Mama’s Hot Sauce
My souvenir. A bottle of Yo Mama’s Official Hot Sauce.
I may have mentioned that I was eagerly awaiting the start of the TV series Better Call Saul. Like, since 2013. Sunday, 8 February 2015 was the premier, so I was careful to be back at my hotel in time for the 10 PM start.
I’d even brought my second favourite cap, to wear during the show. It was a gift from my cousin Gus. He died.
(For my favourite cap, look here.)
My Second-Favourite Hat
And I was just in time to catch the last five minutes of the show. There’s this thing called “Central Time”.
The happy ending is that I made sure I was tuned in way before the encore the next day, so I saw not only the first two episodes, but caught the lead in show, which was (ah!) Breaking Bad. And not just any episode, but the devastating “Felina.”
Oh, was I happy!
