I didn’t really expect very much when I heard SyFy was developing a series based on Lev Grossman’s The Magicians. The book, the first volume of a best-selling trilogy, is quite good. Not a surprise, as Grossman, Time magazine’s book critic, holds degrees in comparative literature from Harvard and Yale.
On the other hand, SyFy is the network best known for the likes of Sharknado. And Sharknado 2, 3 ,4, and 5.
In this case, the network did justice to the source material. The Magicians is almost inevitably described as “Harry Potter for grown-ups”, and the show earned its “MA” rating.
The Magicians returns for a second season on 25 January 2017. The first series was so densely packed that I plan to marathon it over the next week, so I’ll be up to speed for the new season. Also, because it was really enjoyable first time around.
