The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, a magnificent estate about an hour’s train ride out of Paris, hosts an annual Grand Siècle Day to celebrate the glories of France under the Sun King, Louis XIV. There’s an elaborate picnic, and costumed guests and entertainers stroll the grounds. At the end of the day, a jury selects the year’s best costume.
My favourite holiday, by a mile, is Halloween. I’ve always loved Renaissance Faires, and my ultimate dream vacation is a visit to Venice during Carnevale, so, yes, Grand Siècle Day at the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte immediately goes on The Someday List, along with Bruges, the Dorothy Parker Walking Tour of New York, Dubrovnik, and a ride on the Orient Express.
Here are some pictures found on the Web, from this year’s Grand Siècle Day, which was held on 26 June.
And this short video is a history of Vaux-le-Vicomte.
