At the same time I found out that the SyFy channel was starting its Childhood’s End miniseries last night, I learned of another treat from the network that brought us Sharknado, Sharknado 2, and Sharknado 3. SyFy is running a “Special Sneak Peek” at The Magicians, a 12-episode series based on Lev Grossman’s best-selling The Magicians Trilogy. (Not quite sure how they can call it a “Sneak Peek” when they’re advertising it during every other commercial break.)
The full series is supposed to launch on 25 January 2016, but you can watch the entire first episode on Wednesday, 16 December 2015, immediately after the finale of Childhood’s End. And even better, it’s commercial-free. SyFy is clearly feeling guilty about reviving the long-dead career of Ian Ziering (see Sharknado, Sharknado 2, and Sharknado 3, above) and is trying to make amends by offering some interesting programming, It’s not enough, but it’s a start.
Here’s a teaser for the show. Warning: Language NSFW.
Jason Ralph who plays the lead, “Quentin Coldwater”, reminds me a lot of the British actor Andrew Lee Potts, probably best known from the series Primeval.
And here’s a more extended sample. Warning: Language NSFW.
Lev Grossman gave a funny and interesting Google Talk last summer.
