The magestic Charlotte Rampling has been delivering intelligent and unforgettable film performances–in English, French, and Italian–for 50 years. She’s never been nominated for an Academy Award. but that may change next February. Her performance in 45 Years is getting across-the board raves, as is that of her co-star, Tom Courtenay. Rotten Tomatoes has 45 Years at 97% on the Tomatometer.
It’s early days, but the Best Actress category looks to be extremely strong this year. At this point, Brie Larson seems almost certain for a nomination for Room, and Cate Blanchett will probably get one for Carol, if she’s up for lead instead of supporting. The Best Actress category tends to be dominated by younger actresses, just as the Best Actor category favours older actors, but Charlotte Rampling could have competition from two other potential Lifetime Achievement Award nominees: Lily Tomlin, for Grandma and the never-nominated Blythe Danner, for I’ll See You In My Dreams
The film opened in the UK on 28 August 2015, and will open in the US on 23 December 2015.
Here’s a short video in which the stars and director of 45 Years discuss the film.
