In which Eddie Redmayne goes for a second consecutive Oscar.
After winning the Oscar for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role” for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, Eddie Redmayne takes on another physically challenging role. In The Danish Girl, he plays Lili Elbe, one of the first recipients of sex reassignment surgery.
The Danish Girl is based on David Ebershoff’s 2000 novel of the same name, and was directed by Tom Hooper (Les Misérables, The King’s Speech). It’s a love story inspired by the lives of artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener, who is played by Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) .
Events of the past few months—Caitlyn Jenner’s emergence, etc.—have given the film an unanticipated timeliness. The movie will be shown at both the Venice and Toronto film festivals in September. It opens on 27 November 2015 in the US, and on 1 January 2016 in the UK.
