David and Sarah, my brother and sister-in-law, visited from California this week, and we spent part of Saturday morning at the National Zoo.  The Panda House was closed, due to Mei Xiang’s pregnancy, but we got a brief glimpse of Bao Bao before she decided she was tired of the crowds and wanted to be alone.  One of the Zoo’s volunteers mentioned that Bao Bao would be celebrating her second birthday on Sunday.

This morning, there was a birthday celebration in the panda enclosure.  Bao Bao got her traditional frozen fruitsicle cake, which contained all of her favorite treats, including honey, apple juice, apple sauce, bamboo, carrots, and beet juice.

For a special birthday enrichment activity, keepers decorated cardboard boxes and placed additional treats within for her to investigate and enjoy.
