Frank Cadogan Cowper was yet another artist who was called “The Last of the Pre-Raphaelites.” Born in the 1877, he lived into the late 1950s, dying only a few years before the great revival of interest in Victorian painting took place in the 1960s.
This painting, “La Belle Dame Sans Merci,” isn’t really Victorian. It was painted in 1926, but the look and feel of the work would not have been out of place decades earlier. The painting was inspire by John Keats’ poem of the same name.
“La Belle Dame Sans Merci” is in a private collection.
