Sunday Morning — Victoriana of the Week

“The Keepsake,” by Kate Elizabeth Bunce

Kate Bunce’s painting “The Keepsake” was inspired by  Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s poem,
“The Staff and Scrip.”

“Then stepped a damsel to her side,
And spoke, and needs must weep:
‘For his sake, lady, if he died,
He prayed of thee to keep
              his staff and scrip”

Bunce was a Birmingham painter associated w/the Arts and Crafts movement.  She was active from the 1880s through the 1920s.  You can see the heavy Pre-Raphaelite influence in her work.

“The Keepsake” is in the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery.
