This is a sad story. The painting, “The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke,” was painted by Richard Dadd during the 43 years he spent in psychiatric hospitals.
When Dadd was 25, he became violent and delusional while traveling through Egypt. Like at least two of his siblings, Dadd was probably schizophrenic. He returned to England, and was taken to a rural village to recuperate. In August of that year, he become convinced that his father was possessed by the Devil. Dadd killed him with a knife a knife and razor.
He was sent to Bedlam, and, later, to Broadmoor Hospital. He spent the rest of his life in the hospitals.
