George Henry Grenville Manton - Isabella and the Pot of Basil

“Isabella and the Pot of Basil”, by George Henry Grenville Manton

A few months ago, I posted about the Delaware Art Museum’s sale of William Holman Hunt’s “Isabella and the Pot of Basil”.   In June, the painting sold for £2,500,000 (about USD 4,250,000), well below Christie’s initial estimate of £5,000,000-8,000,000.  This sale has been a disaster for the Delaware Art Museum.  It didn’t make the money the museum needed to pay for a construction project, and it lost one of the museum’s key artworks.

Quite a few Pre-Raphaelite and PRB-influenced artists. including  John William Waterhouse and Sir John Everett Millais, have been inspired by the tale of Isabella and Lorenzo.   Today’s work is by George Henry Grenville Manton, and can be found at the Wycombe Museum, in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England, about 30 miles north of London.

See my earlier posting for the tragic story depicted in  “Isabella and the Pot of Basil”.
